Andy Martin
Andy Martin, Director

Andy is an experienced consultant who has worked for a diverse range of corporate and non-profit clients on issues of strategy and corporate responsibility.

He was previously Head of Strategy at Cancer Research UK, the UK’s largest charity. He helped to develop their new five-year fundraising strategy, their public health strategy and numerous other initiatives.

He is an advisor to a number of start-up businesses and a director of the Democratic Society. Prior to starting Firetail, he was part of the team that founded consulting firm Credo, where he worked on strategy, innovation and transaction services. His first job was as an intern in the Prime Minster’s Policy Unit and he graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Rachel Mclachlan
Rachel McLachlan, Consultant

Rachel has over twelve years’ experience in a wide range of senior strategic planning, fundraising and marketing roles within the not for profit sector. She has worked in a number of internal strategy roles in charities and think tanks, and has advised commercial, philanthropic, public and government sector organisations on strategy development and implementation.

Prior to joining Firetail she was Head of Strategic Planning at Save the Children UK where she led the development of a new three year fundraising strategy, integrated marketing and fundraising approaches, and the design of new business and innovation strategies to support fundraising. Before this, Rachel was Head of Planning for Cancer Research UK’s Local Supporter Fundraising team.

Earlier in her career, Rachel worked for national and international charities including Merlin, Demos and Forum for the Future.

Ethan Kline
Ethan Kline, Consultant

Ethan has worked as a consultant with Firetail since 2007. He has a background in consulting to commercial clients in sectors including financial services, leisure and manufacturing.

He has particularly strong experience in working at Board level on communications and change strategies. Prior to becoming a consultant he oversaw the European marketing for a leading Executive Search firm.

He began his career as a legal policy analyst for the Corporation for National Service, a public-private partnership that engages Americans in community service.

Dan Lewer
Dan Lewer, Consultant

Dan is a strategy consultant with a particular interest in social enterprise and non-profit issues.

Before joining Firetail he was Senior Strategy Manager at The Open University, where he developed the university’s approach to global education markets and commercial products. He was also involved in the university’s response to the change in funding for UK higher education.

Before this he was a consultant for national charities, and has led projects including corporate strategies, environmental strategies and campaign evaluations. He also set up Carbon Retirement, a carbon management business, and worked as an investment analyst at a private equity company. His first job was at RSe Consulting, where he worked with public sector clients. Dan has a BSc in International Relations from LSE.

Ruthann Hughes
Ruthann Hughes, Consultant

Ruthann’s background is in research and consultation. Working with some of the best known names in research, she has developed and delivered qualitative, quantitative and deliberative studies in a range of sectors including environment, education, heritage and transport.

On high profile national consultations Ruthann has run workshops and interviews with stakeholders to explore how policies can be shaped and communicated to work for and resonate with the right groups. Often working closely with marginalised groups, for example on behalf of local and national health bodies, Ruthann’s work has helped to shape local services to meet the needs of the most disadvantaged users.

As a graduate in Modern European Languages, Ruthann also has a strong international background. She has run international research studies and worked as a project manager at SOVA where she coordinated a network of European voluntary sector organisations.

Calum Handforth
Calum Handforth, Associate Consultant

Calum has worked on a number of projects with Firetail that build on his experience and education in international development, policy and advocacy.

He previously worked as a parliamentary assistant and was Communications and Administrative officer for the Agriculture for Impact project.

Calum has an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics and a BA (Hons) in Politics, Queen Mary, University of London. He has also worked as an adventure sports photographer, covering snowboarding and skiing competitions.
