Andy is the founder and Director of Firetail. He has over 15 years experience as a strategy consultant and is an advisor to senior leaders in charities, NGOs, foundations and social enterprises.He has led strategy and evaluation engagements for clients including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the United Nations, the Queen’s Trust, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Oxfam International, Save the Children UK, Malaria No More UK, Comic Relief and Anthony Nolan. He also works as an advisor to a number of start-ups and social ventures.
Prior to founding Firetail, Andy was Head of Strategy for Cancer Research UK, where he ran the Strategy Unit and Consumer Insight teams, covering fundraising, marketing and public engagement for the UKʼs largest charity.
He was a founder member of the commercial strategy consulting firm Credo, and a founding Governor of the public participation organisation, The Democratic Society. Andy holds a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford.
Dr Yvonne Pinto
Yvonne is the Director of ALINe at Firetail. She brings over 20 years experience in advancing agriculture and rural development in Sub Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America in the Agriculture Division of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Africa Executive at the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. She has been involved in creating and managing multiple institutions in Africa and has extensive experience with non-profit governance structures and programmes dealing with complex strategies in sector transformation and in qualitative and quantitative evaluations.
She is a member of steering committees for Impact Evaluation, Gender Assets and Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture, and is a Trustee of the WorldFish Centre in Malaysia, the Kilimo Trust in Uganda and an the Independent Steering Committee of the Roots, Tubers and Bananas Collaborative Research Programme based at the International Potato Centre in Peru. She has extensive networks as an adviser for a number of governments, the UN and builds on a successful past as a plant scientist and virologist. Yvonne has a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Reading and MSc and PhDs from Imperial College at Wye and is an established mentor.
Ruthann leads many of Firetail’s projects in complex qualitative research and evaluation. She has recently worked on projects for Agriculture for Impact, Migration Observatory (at the University of Oxford), Fixers, Malaria No More UK and The Royal Society of Chemistry. Over the last 15 years Ruthann has designed and delivered qualitative and quantitative programmes for organisations across a variety of sectors and geographies. In her evaluation work, she regularly interviews senior stakeholders from industry, government and civil society across the world.
Prior to joining Firetail, Ruthann worked as a consultant at Opinion Leader where she ran large scale national and international research projects for public, commercial and third sector clients. Ruthann holds a degree in Modern Languages from the University of Leicester and speaks French and German.
Andre is Deputy Director of the ALINe initiative. An experienced Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation (MLE) Consultant, he has worked for over ten years in India, South-East Asia and East Africa where he has applied traditional, participatory and multi-stakeholder approaches to designing and implementing MLE systems.
He is a skilled facilitator who has worked on farmer-centred agricultural development and local governance and has conducted research into the complex organisational and social dynamics underlying processes of learning and change. Andre has an MA in Participation, Power and Social Change from the Institute of Development Studies and a BSc in Environmental Policy with Economics from LSE.
Rachel has led Firetail’s work for clients including Bond, Groundwork, Action for Children and the British Council. She worked in a wide range of senior strategic planning, communications and marketing roles within the not for profit sector.
Prior to joining Firetail she was Head of Strategic Planning at Save the Children UK where she developed a new fundraising strategy, led integrated marketing and fundraising offers and led the design of business development and innovation strategy.
Previously, as Head of Planning for Cancer Research UK’s Local Supporter Fundraising team she was part of the team that developed the popular ‘Race for Life’ event and ran strategy projects across fundraising and the wider organisation. Rachel worked for national and international charities including Merlin, Demos and Forum for the Future. She graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English.
Calum is a Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation (MLE) Consultant with a particular interest in the role of technology in MLE and international development more widely. Separately, Calum is also a Churchill Fellow learning how data and technology can best be used to deliver better public services.
Prior to joining ALINe, Calum was a civil servant where he managed primary and secondary legislation, worked as a policymaker on UK and EU policy, and in HMRC’s Behaviour Change Team where he ran one of government’s largest Randomised Control Trials. Before joining government he co-managed Christian Wolmar’s bid for the 2016 London Mayoral nomination, and worked as a strategy consultant for international development and civil society organisations.
Calum has an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Politics from Queen Mary, University of London.
Henry is a consultant at Firetail and his recent clients including Action for Children, Autistica and The Audience Agency. Before joining Firetail, he worked as a research consultant across a range of projects in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. He has worked for Nesta’s research and policy team, researching UK venture capital and innovation in the public sector.
In the private sector he conducted market research for private equity firms, management consultancies and pharmaceutical companies. He has also worked as a strategic analyst for the Central Office of Information (Cabinet Office) and as a policy officer for the Scottish Government. He has a degree in Politics from the University of Edinburgh and a Masters in Legal and Political Theory from University College London.
Anne is a Monitoring and Evaluation Consultant with over 6 years of experience investigating the links between poverty and food and nutrition security across Africa, South and South East Asia. She is a multidisciplinary analyst, spanning from agricultural economics, environmental sustainability to public health. Anne has thematic experience in fisheries, climate change adaptation and sustainable livelihoods.
Prior to joining ALINe, Anne worked as a research assistant for the WorldFish Center in Malaysia and Imperial College London, where she specialised in impact evaluation of agricultural programmes. She has worked for a number of clients and donors, including the World Bank, the FAO, Conservation International and the Rockefeller Foundation. Anne has an MSc in agricultural economics from University of Montpellier, and a BA in international economics from University of Paris 10.
Ilse van der Hoeven
Ilse gained experiences in the private, public and non-profit sector before joining Firetail. She has worked for a variety of civil society organisations, from large organisations such as Oxfam to grassroots projects in Guatemala and Mexico.
Her private sector experience includes working for PR agency Edelman and Triodos Bank. Ilse holds an MSc in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from University College Maastricht in The Netherlands. She speaks Dutch, English, German and decent Spanish and Portuguese.
Cassidy is a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Consultant with ALINe. Prior to joining ALINe, Cassidy spent four years working with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) where she specialised in promoting environmental governance in post-conflict and disaster-affected countries. Most recently she served as the team leader in Sudan managing a programme aimed at reducing local level incidents of conflict over natural resources.
She has thematic experience working on agricultural development, climate change, and has led research focusing on the links between gender, natural resource management and peace-building. Cassidy has also held positions in the US government and NGO sector working on environmental policy and advocacy. She holds a BA in Political Science from San Diego State University, an MA in Environmental Economics and Policy from Duke University and certificate in International Development Policy from the Sanford School of Public Policy.
Maria is a consultant with a cross-sector background in international development, private sector development and CSOs. Her clients have included Malaria No More, Meningitis Research Foundation, Fairtrade Norway and Ethical Trading Initiative Norway.
Before joining Firetail, Maria worked with trade and regional integration in East Africa. She has worked extensively on business development and conducted reviews and evaluations of organisations, operations and programmes. She has spent three years working with international business development in the Western Balkan markets at the Swedish Trade Council. Maria holds an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics, and undergraduate degrees in International Economics and Business Administration. She speaks fluent Swedish and Serbian and decent German and Italian.
Jan is Monitoring and Evaluation Consultant with experience in higher education, public health, research into policy, crime and human rights. For his work, Jan draws on a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods which he has applied in the academic and international development context. He is skilled in conducting Randomised Controlled Trials, participatory evaluations and Value for Money analyses to mention a few.
After finalising his studies in Psychology and Economics, Jan worked as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer with the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) in Oxford. He implemented monitoring and evaluation activities for capacity building programmes with the aim to strengthen research access, production and uptake, mainly in Africa and Asia. He also has experience from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Manisha is the Finance Manager at Firetail responsible for invoicing, budgeting, financial management and operations.
An experienced accountant, she previously worked as a financial controller in a variety of businesses including firms in the media, financial services and technology industries.
