“Consumers in Europe” is a massive 383-page study of consumer behaviour in EU markets. It covers major consumer markets, including health, culture, communications and education. For each market it covers access, choice, satisfaction, switching behaviour and quality. It’s huge and it’s free. Read more

Allforgood.org has been launched as part of President Obama’s “United we serve” initiative. The project is a “Google 20% project” built using the 20% of the time Google allows its engineers to work on things that interest them. It carries UK opportunities from volunteermatch, but groups can add their own listings. Read more
Fundraising: 4,000 places to find money
The NCVO and OTS have launched Funding Central this week. It offers a ‘guided search’ facility to connect civil society organisations over 4,000 grant, loan and contract opportunities. The grants appear to be mainly drawn from government and NDPBs rather than independent grant givers. Read More
Innovation: Lend for Peace
Lend for Peace allows people to make small loans to entrepreneurs in the Palestinian territories, promoting peace through economic stability. Like Kiva, they offer financial and social returns, but one of their aims is to make the issues faced by Israelis and Palestinians more accessible and tangible. Read More
Economics: The Reith Lectures, “A New Citizenship”
Harvard Professor Michael Sandel is giving the 2009 Reith Lectures on “A New Citizenship”. His thesis is that we have “drifted from having a market economy to being a market society” and that market norms change people’s behaviours over and above the price mechanism. Among other things, this explains why Britain has higher quality blood donations than the US. Read More
