Food aid by text message

In a pilot scheme, the UN is distributing food aid vouchers to Iraqi refugees in Syria by text message. Each family is given a special SIM card, which will be sent vouchers to be spent in local shops. The UN have said that “all the 130,000 Iraqi refugees currently receiving food aid from the agency in Syria have mobile phones”. As one commentator said, “We’ve reached a very strange point in human history when it is assumed that people who don’t have access to food will have working cell phones”. READ MORE
